Cycling in the Herault: green trails and routes

The Herault is a good area for cycling. It’s flat near the coast, the roads are quiet as soon as you leave the main highways, and there are more and more paved greenways. We’re not in the Alps, and that’s just fine.

From Florensac, you can ride through the vineyards, along the Canal du Midi or follow the coast without ever pushing too hard. Here are the routes I recommend.

The Agde-Beziers greenway along the Canal du Midi

This is the best-known route in the area. The cycle path follows the Canal du Midi for about thirty kilometres, from Portiragnes to Beziers (and beyond). The path is paved or compacted gravel, flat, shaded by plane trees.

You can pick it up at Portiragnes (15 min by car from Florensac) and ride to Beziers at a leisurely pace. Along the way, you pass locks, follow alongside barges, and can stop for a coffee at the Fonseranes locks (the 9-lock staircase is quite a sight).

• Distance: 30 km return Portiragnes-Beziers
• Difficulty: very easy, flat
• Surface: paved path, some gravel sections

The vineyard loop: Florensac-Pomerols-Montagnac

A loop on small departmental roads, right through the vineyards. You leave Florensac heading north, pass through Pomerols (a quiet wine village), then Montagnac, and return via the D30.

The roads are quiet, especially in the morning. The scenery is vineyards as far as the eye can see, a few isolated farmhouses, and garrigue hills in the background. No big climbs, but a few gentle inclines.

• Difficulty: easy to moderate
• Road: quiet departmental roads

The coast: Agde to Marseillan along the beach

From Cap d’Agde, a cycle path runs along the coast to Marseillan-Plage. It’s flat, it’s by the sea, and in summer there’s a breeze to cool you down.

The stretch from Marseillan-Plage to Sete (the Lido) is wilder. The path exists but is sometimes in poor condition. The view of the Etang de Thau on one side and the sea on the other is worth it.

• Distance: 20 km return Agde-Marseillan. To Sete, around 40 km return
• Difficulty: easy (flat, paved path)
• Wind: watch out for the Tramontane, which sometimes blows hard along the Lido

Passisargues and the Pezenas hills

For those who want a bit of elevation. Head towards Pezenas, then turn off towards Tourbes and Passisargues. The roads climb gently through hillsides covered in vines and olive trees.

It’s more undulating than the other routes, but nothing extreme. The reward: open views across the plain, the hills and the Pyrenees mountain chain on a clear day.

• Distance: 35 km (loop)
• Difficulty: moderate (some hills, total elevation around 300 m)
• Road: departmental roads, very little traffic

Bike hire

You don’t necessarily travel with your own bike. Several rental shops operate in the area:

• Cap d’Agde: several rental shops in the centre (hybrid, mountain, electric bikes). Around 15 to 25 euros per day for a hybrid, 30 to 40 for an electric.
• Agde: rental also available in the town centre.
• Electric bikes: I recommend them if you’re not used to cycling or if you want to do the hillside route without too much effort. It makes all the difference.

Tips

Water: always bring water, especially in summer. There are no water points between villages.

Timing: in summer, ride in the morning (before 10am) or late afternoon. Between noon and 4pm, it’s too hot.

Wind: the Tramontane and Marin winds can blow hard. Check the forecast before setting out, especially for coastal routes.

Helmets: compulsory for children under 12 in France. Recommended for everyone.
