The best beaches between Cap d'Agde and Sete

La Tamarissière and the Cap d’Agde beaches are twelve minutes apart by car, but they feel like different worlds. One is pine trees, fine sand, and families reading under tamarisks. The other is ice cream stands, pedalos, and packed promenades. Both have their purpose. The Lido, halfway to Sète, gives you kilometres of near-empty beach if you’re willing to walk through the dunes.

From Florensac, the sea is genuinely close: 12 km to La Tamarissière, 15 to Cap d’Agde, 30 to Sète’s Corniche. These are the beaches I actually go to, and what to expect from each.

La Tamarissiere: our everyday beach

This is the closest beach to Florensac, 12 km away. You reach it via a road through a tamarisk pine forest, which is lovely. The beach is long, the sand is fine, and there’s room even in July if you arrive before 10am.

The left side is wilder. The right side gets closer to Le Grau d’Agde with a few beach restaurants. The water is clean and the slope is gentle, which is good for children.

Parking: free along the Tamarissiere road. In peak summer, you need to arrive early.

La Roquille beach, Cap d’Agde

This is Cap d’Agde’s family beach. Well-equipped, lifeguards in summer, with showers and toilets. The sand is volcanic, darker than elsewhere. The water is clear.

There are restaurants and ice cream shops right behind. Convenient when you’re spending the whole day. On the other hand, it’s the busiest beach in the area. In August, it’s packed by 11am.

Parking: paid in season (around 6 euros per day). Some free spaces further back, but you’ll have to walk.

La Grande Conque: the volcanic scenery

A small cove at the foot of Cap d’Agde’s volcanic cliff. The sand is black, the rocks too. It feels like a different world. The beach is small, accessed by a staircase. The water turns turquoise when the sun is out.

It’s beautiful, but it fills up quickly. And there are no facilities: no showers, no bar, no shade. Bring everything.

Access: on foot from Cap d’Agde centre, about 10 minutes. No dedicated car park.

The Lido beaches, between Agde and Sete

The Lido is the strip of sand between the Etang de Thau lagoon and the sea, on the road from Marseillan to Sete. Kilometres of near-deserted beach, especially off-season. No buildings, no restaurants. Just sand, sea and wind.

This is my favourite beach when I want peace and quiet. You park along the road (free) and walk down through the dunes. In October or May, you’re often alone.

Note: very little shade, no lifeguards, no toilets. Water can be rough.

The Corniche in Sete

In Sète, the Corniche road runs along the foot of Mont Saint-Clair. Several coves and beaches follow one after another. The water is very clean, often deep blue. The view of the mountain is lovely.

The Corniche beaches are smaller than those in Agde, but they have character. There are beach bars and restaurants in season. Parking is difficult in summer: the road is narrow and spaces go fast.

My tip: go early in the morning or late afternoon. The evening light on Mont Saint-Clair is worth it.

La Plagette beach, Sete

Right at the end of the Corniche, heading up towards the Cimetiere Marin. It’s a small beach tucked between rocks, sheltered from the wind. The water is crystal clear. It has a “secret cove” feel, though in August everyone knows about it.

The access path is steep. Not suitable for pushchairs or people with reduced mobility.

Which beach to choose?

• With children: La Roquille (facilities) or La Tamarissiere (gentle slope, space)
• For quiet: the Lido between Marseillan and Sete
• For scenery: La Grande Conque or La Plagette
• For a full afternoon: the Corniche in Sete (beach + restaurants + walk)

Off-season is even better

The beaches in the Herault aren’t just for summer. In May, September and October, the water is still warm (20 to 23 degrees in September). And above all, you have the beach to yourself. The Lido in October, with no one around, is something special.

Even in winter, a walk along the Corniche or on La Tamarissiere does you good. The sea air, the sound of the waves. You don’t need to swim to enjoy it.
