Family outings in the Herault: ideas for all ages

For a family with children aged 6 to 12 arriving in July, here’s what I’d suggest for a first day: oysters at Bouzigues in the morning (the kids watch the oyster tables on the lagoon while the adults eat), then La Tamarissière beach in the afternoon. Twenty minutes from Florensac each way, very little money spent, and everyone goes to sleep tired and happy.

That’s the tone of this area. Not a theme park, but well-stocked with real things to do. Here’s what the families who’ve stayed with us have enjoyed most.

The Cap d’Agde aquarium

This is the most obvious outing with children. The aquarium is in the centre of Cap d’Agde, 20 minutes from Florensac. It’s not huge (allow 1 to 1.5 hours), but it’s well done. You’ll see Mediterranean fish, sharks, rays, turtles and seahorses.

The touch pools are a hit with the little ones: they can handle starfish and sea urchins. The shark tank is the highlight. For children aged 3 to 10, it’s spot on.

Dinosaur park in Meze

At Meze, 20 minutes from Florensac, an open-air park displays life-size dinosaur replicas among garrigue scrubland. The site is a genuine palaeontological deposit: dinosaur eggs were found here. The museum explains all this with child-friendly panels.

The trail runs about 1 km through pines and garrigue. There’s a dig area where children can play palaeontologist. For ages 4 to 12, it works every time.

Canoeing on the Herault at Saint-Guilhem

The canoe descent of the Herault between the Pont du Diable and Saint-Guilhem-le-Desert is a classic. The gorges are stunning, the water is clear, and the route is manageable for families (children from age 6-7 depending on the operator).

You hire a canoe at the arrival point, a shuttle takes you to the start, and you paddle downstream at your own pace. Allow 2 to 3 hours for 8 km. There are spots where you can swim, small waterfalls, and the cliffs above are impressive.

It’s 45 minutes from Florensac. You can visit the village of Saint-Guilhem afterwards.

Family-friendly beaches

Not all beaches are equal when you have children. Here are the ones I suggest:

La Roquille beach (Cap d’Agde): fine sand, shallow water for several metres, lifeguard in season. The go-to family beach at Cap d’Agde.

Marseillan beach: quieter than Cap d’Agde, fine sand, calm water. Fewer crowds in July and August.

Le Grau d’Agde: a fishing village with a lifeguarded beach. Less touristy, more genuine. You can watch the boats come back into the harbour.

The beaches are 15 to 20 minutes from Florensac. In summer, leave before 10am to find a spot.

Farms and local producers

The Herault is an agricultural department. Several farms open their doors:

Discovery farms: around Pezenas and Montagnac, a few farms welcome families. Children see goats, chickens, donkeys. Some offer workshops (cheesemaking, feeding the animals).

Wine cooperatives: it may not sound child-friendly, but several local cooperatives run tours where children learn about the vine, the grapes and how wine is made. My father was a winemaker, my brothers still are. Vines are the story of every family here. The little ones quickly grasp that grape juice doesn’t grow in cartons.

Oyster farming at Bouzigues: the oyster beds on the Etang de Thau lagoon can be visited. Some producers offer tastings with explanations that children can follow. The sight of the oyster tables on the lagoon is worth the detour on its own.

Easy walks for families

No need to hike for hours. A few short, flat walks suit children well:

The banks of the Herault from Florensac: follow the river, it’s flat, and children can throw stones in the water. Walk as far as they fancy, then turn around.

The Canal du Midi at Portiragnes: the towpath is flat and shaded by plane trees. The locks fascinate children. About 15 min by car to get there.

Mont Saint-Loup at Cap d’Agde: short (4 km loop) but with a bit of a scramble. Sea view at the top. Suitable for children from about age 5-6.

Tips for families

Summer schedule: from June to September, it’s very hot between noon and 4pm. Save water activities for the afternoon and site visits for the morning.

Water and hats: it sounds obvious, but on holiday people forget. Always a hat and a water bottle per child.

Booking: in July and August, book activities in advance (canoeing, aquarium, farms). The rest of the year, no need.

Tuesday market in Florensac: children love it. The fruit stalls, the cheese sellers, the wooden toy vendors. It’s right on our doorstep.
